Poker Explodes at Hawaiian Gardens An undiscovered goldmine - By: Kenna James

As you amble past a smoking, lava-spewing volcano and meander down a lane of palm trees with Hawaiian music playing, you’d be forgiven for stopping to wonder where the heck you are. You are, in fact, only twenty minutes from downtown Los Angeles. In a small city called Hawaiian Gardens, located just off the 605 Carson St. exit, south of the 91 Freeway, lies this gem of a card room. Still largely undiscovered, Hawaiian Gardens has quietly crept its way to becoming the second largest card club in the greater Los Angeles area. As I tour the floor with Fred Fiering, Director of Casino Operations, I notice the casino is nearing capacity (over 170 gaming tables) and it’s only Monday afternoon!

I’ve turned up right in the middle of the weekly $25 tournament, which today has over 300 players and a $6,000 first prize. Business is booming says Fred: “We are realizing a growth of 30% a year right now and, with expansion plans for a bigger and better facility, which will have banquet rooms and all the other amenities, the future is only going to get brighter.”

This is a far cry from its humble beginnings back in December 1997 when Hawaiian Gardens first opened its doors, or should I say door. With the pressing need to get off the ground before California State Laws imposed a strict moratorium on new casinos, HG quietly opened with only five gaming tables in a trailer, literally, in the parking lot of what would become their permanent facility. The casino is the brainchild of Dr. Irving Moskowitz and it has always maintained the personal attention to service that comes with family-run businesses. In the face of all the large competing card rooms in Los Angeles, HG is the ‘Rocky’ of the card clubs. Against all odds, it has risen not only to compete with, but also surpass, much of the competition.

The genius behind this remarkable growth story is General Manager Ron Sarabi who has always made customer service, community involvement and employee loyalty a priority. Angie Cortese, Casino Training Coordinator, tells me a story that illustrates the point. “When we opened the doors to the new facility, the first day was reserved only for those players who had played in the trailers. Ron wanted to honor those players that had been there since the beginning by giving them a day to express his appreciation for their business.”

Watchit Media, Inc. Signs Agreement With Hawaiian Gardens Casino - Market Wire

Cotelligent, Inc. (OTC BB: CGZT) announced today that Watchit Media, Inc., its wholly owned subsidiary, has added Hawaiian Gardens Casino, its first California-based card club client, to its long list of hospitality and gaming clients. Watchit is providing two new television channels to enhance the Hawaiian Gardens Casino player experience.

Watchit Media will develop all of the content for the property's thirty-two television screens to be aired through two channels for gaming, player tracker card and food and beverage promotions. Watchit Media began this project by producing original video footage of the property presenting an overview of the various games and food services enhancing the player experience.

Hawaiian Gardens Casino has a history that began in 1995 when a referendum was approved to allow the casino to operate. The casino operation started in a trailer with five tables. The facility has expanded over the years to 150 gaming tables today. "We have a large repeat customer base, and an important way to communicate with them is through our television screens that are dispersed throughout the casino floor," said Ron Sarabi, General Manager of the Hawaiian Gardens Casino. "I was not satisfied that we were only showing sports and soap operas on the screens. I felt there was much more we could do to take advantage of the fact our customers may spend five to six hours per day with us."

Watchit Media's approach to Private Venue Programming(TM) is the latest advent in "new media" referred to as Narrowcasting on Private Video Networks(TM). Private Video Networks from Watchit Media allow organizations to communicate specifically and directly with customers in a variety of venues presenting information they are interested in and want to know more about. Information such as gaming promotions offered at Hawaiian Gardens Casino, their Player Tracking Card and its benefits, the wide selection of food and beverages that can be delivered right to the players table are part of Watchit's programming. Private Video Networks, from Watchit Media provide a service to the customers by giving them the information they want to know about the Casino, when they want to know it in an entertaining and enjoyable format.

Mr. Sarabi, who has been in the gaming industry for thirty years, went on to say, "This is a great way to communicate with our customers. They say 'a picture is worth a thousand words.' With the content from Watchit Media running throughout our property, the customer doesn't have to get up from their seat. Everything they want to know is right there on the television screens. This will be an integral part of our promotions. In addition to promoting our games and tournaments, I expect to nearly double the number of Player Tracker Card holders that we have today."

"We feel the potential for Private Video Networks is essentially limitless. There are so many different venues where customers want more information to assist them in making a purchasing decision while they are at a particular establishment," said James Lavelle, Watchit Media Chairman and CEO. "In addition to promoting gaming and food services, Hawaiian Gardens Casino will still have the flexibility to choose other content they may want to run at any time including major sporting events like the World Series or the Super Bowl. The flexibility provides lots of programming options for Hawaiian Gardens Casino," Mr. Lavelle continued.

"Throughout my career I have seen this (Private Video Network) approach used in other casinos. When I spoke with the people from Watchit Media and saw the DVD of content they had developed for their other clients, I knew the concept would work here. I am proud to be the first card club in California to employ this technique," said Mr. Sarabi.

Watchit Media creates, manages, schedules and delivers a variety of dynamic video content to nearly 50,000 hotel rooms, casino entertainment facilities and the outdoor signage of its clients in the U.S.
